The 9News newscast reported that Sterling had a long criminal history that included assault, drug and theft charges. He claims he was arrested in 2009 for resisting arrest and illegally carrying a weapon.
But her sister, Lorna Sterling, said his brother had tried to make a living after his last conviction in 2011.
And Quinyetta McMillon, the mother of his 15 year old son, asked the public not to judge him by his criminal record.
"They're trying to tarnish the image of a man who was nothing but a living to provide for their children," McMillon said, as quoted by USA Today.
